Feels a little overwhelming being out of school and knowing you're not going back to that place, that lab, that building, ever again. As much as I miss it, I'm also pretty excited to kiss it goodbye. Summer's here, and it's my chance to have a little more normal of a life now that I'm not sleeping 3-4 hours a night, grabbing 7-11 nasty-yet-scrumptious breakfast, rushing to school, and rendering (or re-rendering) tons and tons of passes while trying to gauge just how much sleep I still need to feel like a human again, and not a machine.
No one ever said this business was easy, I know that for sure. Not that it's that easy once you're out of a project too: I have my demo reel breathing down my neck everyday whispering "Hey Mike....You gonna work on some stuff? What you gonna model next, huh?" lol. Good thing I love doing this stuff, or this would be torture.
As far as updates:
- I'm considering getting rid of that Evil Queen model off this site for good. I think it was just too far-gone to be saved anymore. I'm going to replace it with a more whimsical-looking Alice-In-Wonderland-ish fancy lady that I drew up the other day: looks much more interesting to look at than just...latex black clothes...and there's a really strong potential for some cool texturing -- something I need some more practice on.
- I've been modeling Toothless the Dragon from the Dreamworks movie "How To Train Your Dragon." Now normally, I give a low-brow to people modeling things that are already 3d-modeled. It may not be, but I feel like it's taboo. However, I fell in love with him when I first saw the movie, and admired his design so much. I felt like I had somehow missed out by not modeling a creature as cool and lovable as Toothless, and the only way I would feel at ease with myself would be to just buckle down and try to recreate him.
To make it a challenge, I downloaded only concept art and fan art images of him; nothing that was a render of him in 3D. I used these as references to make my own orthographics -- So in a way, I'm leaving it up to me to see how he's realized in 3D. So far he's coming out pretty decent, It definitely looks like him :)
- I'm also considering on 2-3 more creature models to do this summer. These are all from concept-work that's not my own, so I can get adjusted to making models from stuff I'm required to recreate (kinda like Toothless ;) )
More updates to come
